Our ward picnic was held at the York Redoubt Park this afternoon. We had never been there, but are now certaintly glad we went. We feel like this park would be something our dad`s would really love to see. Hopefully it is another spot we can take our visitors to appreciate and enjoy.
The Halifax Harbor is the 2nd largest harbor in all the world.
York Redoubt is a historical site, and monument of a large garrison built to defend the harbor from approaching invaders. This Fort was built in 1793.
There are historic fortesses all over the outside of the harbor, all of which are really cool to see, but this monument was by far our favorite.
Defintely, because of the cannons!...
10 large cannons lined the coastline. There is something about just the thought of a cannon ball being shot out of a cannon that is just freaky. They are definitely huge, powerful, leathal weapons. What`s even more amazing is the extensive lengths that were taken to defend this land.
We went through hidden tunnels of the fortress.
Totally neat to see, and explore, but also kind of eery to think of their purpose and functions. Here, Justin and Scotlin are in the Cookhouse.
This is where cannon balls were heated in this large oldfashioned oven. The heated missels were very effective in protecting the area from approching ships.
Heading up to the top to see the full view of the harbor...Scotlin and I had a minute to play around while daddy and Miley were exploring another area. I LOVE the one on one time I get with my kids. I have noticed so much lately just how much Scotlin feeds off of his older sister. And so, the extra time I get to be alone with him to give him the special direction, attention, and teaching he needs is so priceless to me, and I look forward to it so much
. And more than anything else, we just like to have fun together! I love my baby boy!
Haha!... Don`t you love how I smuther him with love, and he just tries to get away from me!! :)
We had such a lovely day visiting this historical site.
The view from the top was truly spectacular. It`s not everyday when you get to stand and look over something so beautiful.
The fortress was so well built and hidden. Any ship entering the harbor would be a sitting duck, and would not stand a chance.
The Halifax harbor is a marvelously beautiful place. We can definitely see why it would need to be protected.
