Our Journey Home

Start: 5 am.

Midday: Detroit.

Nearly There: Parametics

And at last: Home.

Our journey home started as you would expect. Two kids on a tiny airplane, excited and exhausted parents trying to keep them quiet and happy.

The kids had there moments, but were acting really well considering the circumstances. We had a quick layover in Detroit where we hustled to our connecting flight, snarfed some snacks and then jumped on the airplane for another long leg.

The Captain came on the intercom many times during the flight from Detroit to Salt Lake to warn and apologize for the turbulence. The kids slept, played, ate, laughed, yelled, entertained themselves, and managed to stay clean (ALMOST) all the way to Salt Lake.

You might be wondering why Scotlin greeted his grandparents in nothing but a diaper?... He wasn't trying to show off his new built physique, he actually had a bit of an incident on the way down. We hit some rough turbulence during the descend. It was enough to make me sick to my stomach. The plane was rocking back and forth and up and down, and as I sat there looking at Scotlin still as can be clutching to his blanket and his shorts for dear life I thought to myself I bet this is making him nauseous.

We got closer to the ground and Scotlin closed his eyes and fell asleep on Justin's lap. A minute later he started squirming and let out a little cry. We just figured he was having a hard time sleeping because it was so loud and bumpy.

Then, he vomited.
EVERYWHERE.
A LOT.

Sure enough he was nauseous. We felt bad he was sick. We felt bad for giving in so much apple juice. It was hot. We were literally two minutes from touching the ground. Scotlin and Justin were now covered in throw up....

And then I looked at him.

His eyes were closed as if he were still sleeping, but he was as white as a ghost. I looked at Justin and said is he alright??

Both of us started calling his name. "Scotlin?" "Scotlin?" Nothing.
Justin shook him a bit. And tried opening his mouth. He didn't move. his tongue was back in his mouth. For that minute he was not okay.

By now we had landed. I hit the call button. The Flight attendant came quickly, asking if there was a problem. I told her my son was really sick and threw up everywhere. She quickly said she would go grab some towels. We continued to explain that we needed help. She got on the intercom and asked if there was a doctor on the airplane. A call button came on immediately, and a doctor was there in seconds. Scotlin was coming around, and as the doctor moved his legs above his head, and then rolled him onto his side he started to fuss and cry. She asked me if I had checked his pulse and I started to cry.

Outside the plane a medical team was waiting for Scotlin. The flight attendant asked everyone to stay in there seats even though we were parked at the gate because there was a passenger that needed medical attention. Justin and Scotlin exited the plane while Miley and I gathered up our stuff. I had to write down our information and I remember it was hard for me to write my name because my hands were shaking so hard. Miley and I were next off the plane. We were sitting 4th row from the back, so the entire plane was turned around watching us as we bolted.

The parametics had already monitored Scotlin's vitals and he checked out fine. His color was back, and he was just looking around at everyone calm as can be wondering what everyone was so concerned about.

I don't mean to make it sound more dramatic than it was. It all happened so fast. And for a split moment it was really scary. I could be classified as one of those parents that overreacts, but I am also guilty of wanting to be safe not sorry. There is nothing more precious in our world than our kids, and to see Scotlin unresponsive for any period of time sent fear through my spine. I just think the nausea got the best of him, and he checked out for a minute. He gets that from his mom. He is to tiny, and too precious to not be looked after at any and all costs.

We are here now. And all is well. Scotlin went to bed early and Miley played with her uncles. She is having the time of her life. It is hot! Utah looks more like a dessert more now than ever before. There really aren't words to describe how it feels to be in the comforts of your own home with family. It's bizarre to wake up one morning in Halifax, and then settle in that night in Salt Lake City. All in a days work I guess.

That would have been so scary for any parent. I would have done the very same things. So glad all is well and he's OK. Enjoy your family time home and we'll see you when you get back.

Wow, what a story. I got chills from reading it! I'm so glad that he's okay. I don't think you over reacted...I would have done the same thing. It sounds like you were pretty calm through it though. Glad all is well and you're enjoying Utah. I wanted the heat so bad while we were there but it was cool and rained a lot. So enjoy some of that heat and sun for me!!!

Poor baby Scotlin! I don't know if you remember, but a similar thing happened to Bennett when he was about 2 months. His nose got clogged with boogers so far back, i couldn't suction them, and he couldn't breathe. I called 911 and paramedics came. By that time, he had sneezed most of it out, and was coming back around. But he did the same thing-- kind of checked out for a while right after he sneezed everything out. The paramedics say that sometimes, when babies experience a traumatic event physically, their bodies have to kind of "reboot." So they get really weird and unresponsive for a while, and then gradually come back to perfectly fine. It is terrifying though in those moments when they are NOT ok! We are so excited to see you! Please tell me you have plans to come up to Logan! So many of us want to see you-obviously us, and Heidi and Jason, but one of your old friends, Erin, just moved in between Heidi and I. I can't remember her last name right now, but she has two little girls, Aurora (Rory) and Samantha. Please come see us!
